Because of Covid-19 or coronavirus, many of us fear going out to exercise, buy food, and do other essential activities outdoors. It’s even causing more anxiety now that there is a shortage of medical-grade face masks like surgical masks and N95 respirators.Β

This is why it is advisable to create your own face masks. Doing so will help prevent the spread of the infection. Unleash your prepping skills by creating these face masks for you and your family.Β

Do You Need a Mask to Avoid Coronavirus?

The coronavirus can be spread through droplets sprayed in the air when an infected person coughs, talks, or sneezes. It can also be spread through contaminated surfaces where the virus has landed. People can pick the virus with their hands and then touch their eyes, nose, or mouth.

So yes, you need a mask to avoid coronavirus. In some countries like Germany, it is compulsory to wear a face mask while on public transport or buying groceries. The US also recommends that even healthy people wear masks or a clean mouth and nose covering when leaving home.

When and How to Use a Mask

There has been a shortage of medical-grade face masks because of the policies on wearing them, so the US federal government and WHO changed their recommendations.

  • If you are healthy, you don’t need to wear a mask unless you are taking care of a person with Covid-19
  • If you are sneezing or coughing, wear a mask
  • Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water
  • If you wear a mask, then you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly.

How to Make Your Own Mask

Unfortunately, with every country in the world trying to order face masks to protect their most vulnerable from coronavirus, manufacturers haven’t been able to keep up with demand. This is why WHO suggests the prioritization of sick people, those showing symptoms, and people taking care of Covid-infected patients when it comes to wearing masks.

If you really want to protect yourself, channel the prepper in you by making one your own. Here’s how to make a face mask at home.

What You Need for Tshirt Mask

  • A T-shirt
  • Scissors
  • Ruler

First, cut off the bottom of the t-shirt at about 7 inches. The detached T-shirt bottom will make a two-layered rectangle. Cut a smaller rectangle across 6-7 inches of the width. The rest of the cloth will be the face covering and the strings to the mask.

Then, cut the middle of the fabric strips to make strings and tie one set behind your neck and the other behind the back of your head. This depends on the size of the shirt. You may have to cut out more material depending on the size and fit.

Materials You Need for Bandana Mask

You may also create a mask with the following:

  • A bandana or a square cotton cloth
  • Two hair ties

Lay the bandana flat then fold the top to the middle. Then fold the bottom up to the middle so they both meet. Flip the bandana over and fold the top and bottom to the middle again.

Flip the bandana over again and thread the ends through both hair ties, dividing it into thirds. Fold the sides of the bandana in so the hair ties form outer loops that you can put behind your ears.Β

Lastly, flip it again so the pleats are facing outward and the mask is all done.
