The Best Dog Breeds to Keep for When SHTF

Looking for a dog that will help you increase your chances of survival when SHTF? Canines offer a lot of great things to help you get through a disaster. They can warn you, provide emotional support, deter threats, and even assist you in catching food.

But not all dogs are created to do the same job. That is why we’ve provided you with a list of best dog breeds to keep for when SHTF!

Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retrievers, or Labs, are hunting dogs that are also great swimmers because of their large webbed paws. These paws are helpful for their job, which used to be retrieving fishing nets for fishers. This, along with their amazing hunting skills, gave the Lab the name retriever.Β

Labrador Retrievers are extremely loving, compassionate, and very selfless when it comes to their master, making them the most popular breed worldwide. Even though they are susceptible to overheating during intense weather, they are powerful, smart, and have a great sense of smell and hearing.

Their good work ethic makes them a favorite of many Americans, but beware of their high prey drive and clumsiness!

Bernese Mountain Dog

As the name suggests, Bernese Mountain Dogs are perfect for outdoors because they are, well, mountain dogs. Originally farm dogs in Switzerland, Bernese Mountain Dogs are always stimulated, protective, good-natured, and active. These sturdy yet calm dogs are reliable when it comes to herding livestock, protecting the family, and pulling carts even ten times heavier than them.

These easy-to-train dogs can help with handling or carrying your survival gear. They also make excellent trackers. Unlike Labs, they do well during harsh conditions. Unfortunately, Bernese Mountain Dogs only live from 6 to 8 years.Β

Originally from Turkey, the Akbash dog used to be bred for the purpose of guarding livestock against predators and intruders. This is why being loyal runs in their blood. They are also extremely suspicious of people they do not recognize.

The Akbash is commonly mistaken as a herding dog because they spend lots of time with livestock lying in the field with cows and birds for hours on end.

However, if you want an affectionate dog, they aren’t really the best choice. That’s because their loyalty doesn’t extend to being interested in games like fetch or cuddling. They would rather roam their territory while watching for intruders.

German Shepherds

The German Shepherd is a large breed dog that is a member of the hering class as they work for sheep in the hinterland. They are intelligent, strong, and very obedient, making them easy to train and useful in many ways.Β

They are ideal companions when SHTF because of their common job in police and military around the world. They are protective, loyal, and among the most registered breeds. They will scare away looters or intruders to keep your family safe, have great stamina, and an exceptional sense of hearing or smell.Β

Border Collie

Border Collies have a supernatural amount of energy and stamina with their ability to run up to even more than 50 miles per day. They are also ideal working dogs because they are used to spending their days outdoors. They also have an uncanny ability to perceive what you’re about to tell them before you ask it because of their natural herding instincts.Β

They will absolute please you by making your life much easier. They are proven to have the mental strength and are up for any kind of physical exercise.

This dog breed is also a great guard for when SHTF. These large working dogs need to be active and well-trained. However, it might take a professional trainer to do the job. Otherwise, raising them will be the complete opposite of what you expect. They make a great family dog with proper socialization and exercise.
